If Only Someone Would Listen…

Isn't this the main problem we have as songwriters? Even if we've had some success, it’s still nice to get people to hear what you have made. Not to make a million dollars, nor for fortune and fame, but just to know that somewhere out there, people are listening with interest to what you write. And maybe it made their day better.

That’s the appeal to me of Airplay Radio (formerly called Jango). We’ve been using it for our artists music and they are finding fans all over the world. Every time someone hears your song, with one touch they can say they liked it, and you get an email telling that person from wherever they are, likes your song. It's just feels good. It's confirmation that someone got something from it.

I get emails every day from songwriters anxious to show me their song and get comments back. Although I can’t always do that since this is one of the services we exist on as a company, I am looking for ways to give songwriters a voice. They don’t always need a publishing deal, but they DO always need encouragement. That’s our goal with this blog and all we do with our businesses, services, and blogs.

“Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

So how can you be heard?

Well, lucky you. You live in a time when anyone can turn on a computer and create a space where possibly millions could find you. Even if you don’t have a computer, you can go to a public library and use one for free. Then go to Reverbnation, or Jango, or Youtube, or Soundcloud, or any number of sites (I suggest as many as you can!) and put up a page about your music.

We have other blog posts on social media (like this one) but this is where Twitter and Facebook come into play, to find and reach out to friends, colleagues, and family and push them to the places you have posted your music.

Now I will say this: it takes some initiative. It takes you deciding that today’s the day. You are not going to sit on your music any longer, but instead take it out to the world and see what people say. It may seem a daunting challenge, but God did not create us to hide our talents.

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.” - 1 Peter 4:10

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” - Matthew 5:14-16

The reason I got into Christian music, was because I wanted to be a shining light in a dark world, or even in just a person's dark soul. The other reason I got into Christian music was because I knew God had given me a gift, and I knew I was supposed to use it, in order to benefit others. But for me, the hard part is keeping those reasons up front in my mind. It's so easy to get to a point where you want to be a star, or make alot of money. Sometimes I concentrate on playing and singing well enough, to get complements from people. I like to hear people say that I'm good, and I completely forget why I'm doing what I do. And I doubt that I'm the only person who has this problem. However, God, by His wonderful grace, will not allow me to stay self centered very long. The Holy Spirit always has ways of bringing me back down to earth, where His real work is to be done.
